Most birthmarks are harmless and do not require treatment. However, as a cosmetic issue, many choose to have them removed.
Methods of removal also vary, depending on the type and size of the individual’s birthmark.

Dr Cheong is a dedicated dermatologist with over two decades of experience under her belt. She is also particularly experienced in the treatment of birthmarks through both surgical and non-surgical means.
Unsurprisingly, Dr Cheong’s special interest lies in cosmetic dermatology – the branch of dermatology that involves improving the physical appearance of the skin by correcting surface flaws such as birthmarks, scars, moles, and so on.
Qualifications:
Some types of birthmarks, such as hemangiomas, are generally known to go away on their own during childhood. Here are some types that tend to stay:
The most common type of birthmark, they are thin, flat, pinkish areas of skin that feature mostly on the back of the neck and on a baby’s upper eyelids, upper lip, or between the brows. Those on the eyelids tend to fade, however, those on the back of the neck tend not to.
These present at birth and are usually brown. They can appear on any part of the body and come in various shapes and sizes. Some appear alone, but others appear in patches. The large ones need to be monitored as they can become cancerous later in life.
Smooth birthmarks that can present at birth but often develop in childhood. They are usually oval-shaped and light brown. These birthmarks generally do not go away and may even increase in number and darkness, but are often harmless. However, the presence of six or more larger spots may be linked to neurofibromatosis, which will require further testing and intervention.
Port-wine stains initially appear pinkish at birth, but tend to darken into deep red or purple after a few years. They tend to be found on the face and is a group of abnormally formed blood vessels in the skin. Port-wine stains do not fade or go away, and in fact most darken, thicken and become bumpy during adulthood.
The treatment used will depend greatly on the size, texture and type of birthmark. However, they come in two main forms: Laser Removal and Surgical Excision.
Laser Removal
Uses pulses of light energy to quickly and visibly reduce the amount of pigmentation in the skin
Effective for vascular birthmarks and port-wine stains that are close to the skin’s surface
Will require a few treatment sessions (approx. 2-4)
Minimal discomfort: a tolerable tingling sensation
Minimal downtime: slight redness post-treatment, but will subside in a week
Surgical Excision
Anaesthesia will be used to prevent pain, and the pigmented tissue will be carefully removed
Dr Cheong, who’s certified in Dermatologic Surgery, will be able to deftly and precisely remove birthmarks, before carefully closing the wound with minimal scarring
